Would You Climb A Tree?
When I was a child, it was fun climbing trees. As an adult, not so much. It’s been a long time since I climbed a tree and unless a bear is chasing me, I have no plans to ever do so again.
Even if someone famous was passing through my town, I would have to want to see him really, really badly in order to convince myself to climb a tree to get a better view. But that’s exactly what Zacchaeus did when Jesus came to his town. As Jesus passed through the streets of Jericho, a crowd pressed around him. Zacchaeus was shorter than average and couldn’t see Jesus over the crowd, so he climbed up in a sycamore tree.
Zacchaeus was despised in his town because he was a tax collector for Rome and defrauded the people of Jericho by overcharging them, a common practice in that day. Even so, you’ve got to admire Zacchaeus for wanting to see Jesus so badly that he, a grown man, would climb up into a tree.
How badly do we want to see Jesus? How eager are we to hear what He has to say? Are we as eager as Zacchaeus was that day?
Jesus changed Zacchaeus’ life that day. He offered him grace and forgiveness, despite his sins. He stands ready to change our lives, too.
